CBD and it’s Immune Boosting Properties

CBD AND ITS IMMUNE BOOSTING PROPERTIES

Before mentioning our immune systems, it’s important to remind ourselves about the endocannabinoid system and its importance as a neurotransmitter in our body. Our endocannabinoid system is made up of CB1 and CB2 receptors, as well as endocannabinoids (anandamide and 2-AG) and the proteins that transport everything, allowing them to break down in the body. Both CB1 and CB2 receptors are found in your immune system, though CB2 is far more abundant.
The endocannabinoid system can help maintain homeostasis between all the systems in our body. Your body also produces endocannabinoids when necessary to help regulate cell function, including those in your immune system.

Various studies and research have suggested that CBD works extremely well as an immunosuppressant and immunomodulator. Immunosuppressants are agents that suppress and sometimes completely prevent the immune response. Immunomodulators are also agents, but deal with the regulation and normalization of the immune system.

Here are just a few ways that CBD has been shown to work in a positive impact on our immune system:

  • Once activated, the CB2 receptors have an anti-inflammatory effect and are therefore a potential therapeutic for autoimmune disorders as well as neurodegenerative diseases.
  • The CB1 receptors, when activated, suggest that cannabinoids with an affinity for CB1 receptors could potentially help in the treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative conditions, like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • CBD is considered to be an immunosuppressant, therefore reducing the production of cytokine (the proteins involved in causing inflammation among people with chronic illnesses) and also inhibiting T-cell production and functions.
  • CBD supports the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, a type of white blood cell that play a major role in the body’s response to the presence of viruses.

Our immune systems and their health have been a recent topic of widespread discussion, given the current worldwide pandemic. We know the people most at risk are the elderly with chronic conditions and anybody whose immune system is compromised. It is therefore vital we keep our immune systems healthy and strong.
