Does your furry friend need help calming down, increasing appetite or even relief from pain and inflammation? Here is what you need to know about supplementing your pet’s diet with CBD.
While supplementing with CBD has become very common around the world, doing so for pets is just taking off. We’re already seeing a wider range of CBD products that have been specially formulated just for pets hitting the market. These are particularly prolific for supplementing dogs, cats and horses that suffer from a range of ailments.
For example, CBD is now being used in tinctures and pet treats to assist with anti-inflammatory properties and anti-nausea effects. For many pet owners, there has been overwhelming anecdotal evidence that supplementing their animals with CBD also has a positive influence on appetite, anxiety and even the lessening of the intensity and frequency of seizures. However, it’s important to consult with your veterinarian before introducing any CBD products into your pet’s diet.
CBD & Petcare
There are several studies starting all over the world into the benefits CBD can bring to petcare. The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is sponsoring a study with the Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. This is evaluating the use of CBD in treatment-resistant epileptic dogs and is already yielding positive results. In fact, 89% of dogs who received CBD had a reduction in the frequency of seizures (Efficacy of Cannabidiol for the Treatment of Epilepsy in Dogs).
This means that many pet owners are consulting with their vets in order to supplement their pet’s diet’s with CBD but need to also be made very aware that these products are certainly not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any specific disease. They are simply a way to encourage and support the animal’s endocannabinoid systems to counteract the symptoms experienced from these ailments.
Dosing Your Pet with CBD
It’s important to note that many animals which would be prime candidates for CBD products also possess a far more complex and sensitive endocannabinoid system. This means that it’s very likely that they will sense the effects of CBD and other cannabinoids far more intensely than humans do. While people are always advised to start at a lower dose of CBD and then slowly increase this over time until the desired effects are achieved, this is even more important for pets.
Speak to your vet about the lowest possible dosage to start from then increase this amount while closely monitoring the effects. After all, any medication or supplement carries the risk of a reaction, speak to your vet about what these could be for your specific animal.
