CO2 Extraction Explained

All too often overlooked, the extraction method is not something to ignore if you’re looking for high quality and safe CBD products.

CO2(Carbon Dioxide) extraction is the process of removing all of the beneficial cannabinoids from the hemp plant.  By applying pressure and heat to carbon dioxide, the plant’s essential oils, terpenes and flavonoids are able to be gently extracted.  Once the solution cools down, the CO2 disappears (just like a soda begins to go flat once opened.)  Some manufacturers will start the extraction with liquid CO2, while others might begin with CO2 in gas form.  Either way, CO2 will be added into a chamber that includes the hemp plant and pressure and heat will be introduced.  The CO2 acts as a solvent, allowing the plant material to break up while maintaining all of its essential compounds.

This method of extraction has been hailed as the gold standard by industry experts.  It produces a pure and safe oil of the highest quality, and contains none of the toxic by-products associated with other extraction methods.

Fun fact:  CO2 extraction is already a popular extraction method in the herbal supplement and food industry.  If you drink decaffeinated coffee, you’re more than likely enjoying a product that has been through the CO2 extraction process.

Perhaps the biggest advantage to this method is its ability to isolate each compound separately, including CBD, CBC, CBG, CBN, CBT, terpenes, and flavonoids.  When combined, these oils act in synergy with one another to create what is known as the Entourage Effect.  The belief that, put simply, all of the cannabinoids and terpenes work better together than they do in isolation.  These types of products are known as full & broad spectrum, whereby the product contains many cannabinoids well beyond just CBD.

Some other methods of extraction use ethanol and butane/propane.  These are chemicals that create harmful by-products and residue that you do not want to be ingesting.  Nevermind the fact that you are getting a much lower quality final product.

It’s hugely important to do your research regarding extraction methods before purchasing.  Luckily, you can take comfort in knowing that all CBD products listed on are made using CO2 extracting and have been tested by a third party laboratory for purity and potency. Industry standard C02 extraction machines are also not cheap, so you know the manufacturer is serious about their products.
