Though cannabis has been around for centuries, there is now an industry that is touting the benefits of CBD, and marketing CBD-infused products. Every person is different so it is almost impossible to recommend a particular amount to be taken by someone for a given condition. That makes knowing how much cannabidiol you personally need, not to mention how much CBD you are actually getting in those products, can become very confusing.
Taking cannabidiol is not an exact science. But then again, neither is taking your morning vitamin. How do you know if you are going to be deficient in Vitamin C today? Or by how much? If you get your daily requirement of Vitamin C in your food, then your body doesn’t need the added dose from your vitamin and simply flushes it out. But if you don’t get enough Vitamin C naturally, the difference is made up with your supplement.
Adding CBD to your daily health maintenance routine works much the same way. Your body’s endocannabinoid system is constantly binding endocannabinoids to receptors along the system to make the necessary adjustments to keep your body functioning in a general state of balance. Plant-derived cannabinoids mimic the endocannabinoids that are manufactured by your body. So CBD, as a nutritional supplement in its various forms, can be used to replace any natural deficit of cannabinoids you may have.
Yes, this is a simple explanation, but once again, we can’t know — without testing — if our body is or isn’t producing enough CBD. So here is a common sense guideline to using cannabidiol.
*Do not exceed more than 20mg of CBD(Cannabidiol) in your daily dose as per South African government regulations. Regulation amending s22(A)2 of the Medicine and Related Substance Act, 1965 (Act no.101 of 1965) Published 23 May 2019
How much CBD Should I take; Using Common Sense to Find Your Optimum Number
If you read the label on many of the cannabidiol products on the market, the consensus of opinion seems to be that 10mg is a balanced daily maintenance dose. So start out taking approximately 10mg of cannabidiol in your preferred carrier for a few weeks. Are you feeling good…great!
But if you still feel some pain, anxiety, or whatever you are using CBD for, go up to 20mg per day. Feeling good? Great. Now drop back to 15 mg for a few weeks. Still feeling good? Great. You have found your level of need. But if your pain, etc. returns, then go back up to 20mg and continue using that as your daily maintenance dose.
As you probably already know, it’s virtually impossible to fatally overdose on cannabidiol. So you can continue this pattern, adding 10mg more to your total and backing down 5mg if you are feeling good until you find the dosage that works for you.
But if you find you are still hurting, shaking, etc., here is one more common sense measure to try. Stop taking your daily CBD dose for a week. Are you hurting more? Then the CBD was working, but you were not at an optimum level yet. If you choose to continue using CBD start where you left off and keep trying until you find the dose that works for you.
Beware…not all CBD products of the same size are the same strength.
Let’s look at a 30ml bottle of CBD Concentrate, for example. One milligram is one milligram of CBD product, right? Wrong! One product may have 100mg of CBD infused in that 30ml of the product. Another might have 500mg, and yet another might have 1000mg. The amount is mostly the weight of the oil that is the carrier for the cannabidiol, not the measure of the cannabidiol at all. And the mg amount listed for the cannabidiol is not the amount you get in every dose, but the amount in the whole bottle. To determine how much cannabidiol you are actually getting, you have to determine how much cannabidiol is in each dose.
So for example:
In a 30ml bottle infused with 100mg of CBD, one milliliter of oil delivers approximately 3.33mg of CBD.
While in a 30ml bottle infused with 1000mg of CBD, each milliliter delivers approximately 33.33 mg of CBD.
In other words, besides finding your optimum level of CBD, you also have to know how much CBD your product is delivering. How much cannabidiol are you getting in that pump or dab of rub? How much CBD are you getting in that dropperful of the product? Only by being a careful, comparison shopper and using a little bit of common sense, will be able to get the most benefit out of using cannabidiol.
