Because CBD and THC are closely related, it’s only natural to assume that CBD will make one sleepy, drowsy or tired. The answer however is not that simple.
It’s important to remind ourselves exactly how CBD behaves in our body’s. By interacting with our endocannabinoid system, CBD works alongside the system to produce natural endocannabinoids in our body. CBD is also known to influence specific hormones, in order to restore balance in the body naturally (homeostasis).
Again, because one of the effects of CBD is to induce feelings of relaxation and calmness, it’s natural to think that taking CBD could cause someone to feel sleepy or tired. However, as mentioned above, the role that CBD plays in homeostasis within our body cannot be understated and is such that, if taken in the correct dose, should not cause any of the above ailments.
THC on the other hand is a completely different story. Known to be a very powerful sleep aid, THC binds to the CB1 cannabinoid receptors in your brain. These receptors are involved in regulating sleep-wake cycles. Studies (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5656354/) have shown that THC is also able to imitate the effects of melatonin (the neurotransmitter that controls our body’s sleep) in our body’s.
CBD has shown to act in the complete opposite manner to THC. While it is able to make you feel focused and even energised, it’s also able to act as an anxiolytic (a medication or other intervention that reduces anxiety).
CBD can also be seen as an adaptogen (a substance used in herbal medicine for the claimed stabilisation of physiological processes and promotion of homeostasis).
It works with our body’s common rhythms, so if you are awake and trying to stay focused, it might help you to do so. On the other hand, if you’re trying to go to sleep after a long day, CBD is able to calm and relax your mind.
In conclusion, CBD is able to increase focus and reduce anxiety, because it increases the serotonin levels in our brain. If taken correctly and in the correct dose, CBD should not make the user feel sleepy, drowsy or tired.
